Quake 3

Quake 3 & My Highschool

Ever wanted to blast a rocket in your school? Ever wanted to fire a railgun in your school? Well no problem! It's all possible for the students of my school!

The Idea

Quake 3 Logo I began this project somewhere in octobre 2002, this was my first year MCT ... at that time I was a bit addicted to games, ... no no not that stupid cheaterstrike game ... think a bit more hardcore gaming ... think Quake 3.
This project started by experimenting with GtkRadiant this is a Quake 3 Mapping Tool, after creating some small levels ... I thought about the idea to create the catina of my school for, that would be awesome!

The beginning ...

Screenshot ... 1 ... 2 ... 3 ... pilars here ... 128 units high ... 4 tables in a row ... It took a lot of counting and estimating the distance ... but the result was cool and fun to play, you could shoot in the kitchen or in the dining room and even in the toilets ...
The glasswindows were a bit tricky ... It would be cool if you could break it ... but that wasn't possible. So I decided to place a trigger on each window "if hit then move out of the visible area"

Expansions

Screenshot Eventually it was a bit too small ... the solution? Expand the map with more environnement. So I added the place where you could place your bike, and I added the student tavern "'t Bunkertje" and even a little building where you could buy your paper courses. Guess what ... even this wasn't big enough, so I decided why not build a our A-Block with all the classrooms and stairs ... that would be cool, you could frag someone from way up there way over there ... if you get what I mean?

Time

Screenshot Hmmm I think I've put 3-4 months work in it ... I had lots of problems and limitations like ...

  • All those polygones ... you need a good videocard to play it smoothly
  • Not only a good videocard, also a lot of RAM was needed
  • Compilation time? Euh about 8-10 hours (for a decent test-build)
  • Render problems, which objects had to be marked as detail for the engine to run smoother
  • Opponents? Even bots have to learn their way around the map ... this took also some time to compile
  • Realistic or not? Keep in mind that nothing is measured ... a person is 64 untis high and jumps about 48 units high ... so if you want to play a bit around you had to decide to make it a big bigger or a bit different

Conclusion

It was a bit unfortunate with the limitations of the Quake engine ... but it was a hell of fun creating & playing the map
